patronizing.
I'll likely be 60 before I get my degree.... I just passed a five day able seaman course in Baltimore, and all the late-night cramming and stress made me
ill.

Thanks! Yes, it was a good day. It's motivated me to maybe go back and do teaching. He wants to go back and do a master's, though I don't really
see the point of that other than not having to work for another year lol. Adam has no interest in studying really, he had to work really hard in school to pass
his gcse's and he's pretty contented just working 9-5.
You could be a professor if you wanted to! Though i suppose you've got to get the money together for fees and that. |

i say go for it, dilys. you're charismatic and sharp, you'd make a good teacher. i'd encourage anyone to get as much schooling as practical and
within their ability to handle, and then some... but i've heard they do that in france and they're a nation of layabouts... which isn't necessarily
a bad thing. thanks for the academic encouragement, but i think i'm going to concentrate on making a living for a while and after i travel a good bit and
then get established somewhere i'm satisfied with (like baltimore) i probably will go back to college.

I've gone off the idea now. My mother advises me to slowly improve on what I'm doing now and see how it goes from there. I think working is better than
being a student generally. I like to learn, but not necessarily what's on a set syllabus. Your way sounds about right Yoru.

Well everyone has a different path. Listen to your heart as well as your head about career choices. I agree with your approach-- the education system can't
help but force biases down your throat. I would rather learn on my own as well. Next year I will take some time off to travel and diversify my skills before
coming back to working on boats. I'm also worried about my mom possibly developing Alzheimer's disease down the line, so I don't want to be caught
short in a position where I can't look after her if that becomes necessary... yadda yadda yadda

Oh I don't like the idea of you being tied down like that. Can't your sister help? I imagine if something like that happened to my mother we'd all
help out, though i'm the one with the least commitments.

yes, my sister would surely help, but in spite of the fact that they both live in Georgia, they don't have as much contact as one might expect. plus, years
ago when she was a blazing star across the sky and i was a stick in the mud, she said that if our mom ever developed it (our grandmother was in terminal
decline at that time), i "wouldn't be around." by that i think she meant that i'd be dead or disowned or living in a dark hole somewhere. it
wasn't nice, and i'm determined that will never happen.
