The Wind That Shakes the Barley-- Ken Loach film about the first days of the Irish Republic, set in county Cork.
The Seventh Seal-- Ingmar Bergman film about a knight who plays chess with Death and deals with modern existential issues in a medieval plague-ridden setting, seems to mirror fears of nuclear war and absense of God, inhumane mass-delusion witchunts, how to be sane and free... and stuff.
The Bicycle Thief-- Italian neorealist film made shortly after WWII about a guy who can't work without a bicycle, which is promptly stolen, and which he and his son go on a doomed quest to retrieve in the shady slums of Rome.
